Wander east from Farringdon Station and you’ll find atmospheric 18th and 19th-century corners that are regularly used for filming and are literally Dickensian: Saffron Hill and Greville Street, after all, is the location of Fagin’s Den “…a dirty and more wretched place he [Oliver] had never seen”. Smithfield meat market is a real monument – London’s last great central wholesale market – and you’re spoiled for pubs and restaurants here. The Jerusalem on Britton Street is fabulously vintage; while St John is renowned for its simple but sophisticated food.
